Frequently Asked Questions
What do you do?
Tulsa Pay It Forward meets one time a month to do small random act of kindness projects, determined by and carried out by our small groups the day of the meeting. Tulsa Pay It Forward is about providing kindness through simplicity and serendipity. Check out the page "What We've Done" for examples and pictures of past Pay It Forward days and our group at work.
What happens at Pay It Forward? How do you decide what projects to do?
1. We meet together first as a large group. We will hear about last month's projects, do introductions and general reminders and announcements. Each person chips in $10 cash donation.
2. Next, we break into smaller groups of 5-6 people, depending on the number of people attending that day. Each small group brainstorms ideas for a project to do within the next couple of hours with their portion of the donated money collected that day.
3. Each small group goes into the Tulsa area community and does their group's Pay It Forward project.
4. After completed and early that evening, most team members go online to the Tulsa Pay It Forward Facebook page for an online wrap-up party to post pictures, thoughts, feelings and comments about their group's project.
Yes, it's that simple! And, simple is what makes our group work so well!
When do you meet?
We meet the (generally) on the 3rd Sunday of each month, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The exact dates of our meeting are on the front page of this website as well as www.meetup.com/tulsapayitforward and www.facebook.com/tulsapayitforward
Where do you meet?
We currently meet on the Tulsa University Campus, Allen Chapman Activity Center. It's very easy to find and there is lots of free parking! For directions click here. Parking is available in the Holmes Lot on the East side of the building. You won't be ticketed since we meet on Sunday.
How long do the meetings last?
The length of time depends on the project your small group decides to do that day. First, we will spend about 30-45 minutes in a large group and then small-group brainstorming before heading out to do our projects. Most groups finish anywhere from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. 4:00ish is about standard.
Is there a charge?
We request a $10 cash donation from each person attending each month. Money collected pays for that day's projects. No one will be turned away if unable to donate. Donations are private and anonymous and will only be used for projects. Yes, we do accept larger donations if you are so inspired.
Who can attend?
Anyone and everyone with a heart for helping is welcome! Bring family members, co-workers and friends or come by yourself. Our meetings and project days are a wonderful way to spend time with your family and friends helping others. They are also a great place to meet new friends and be a part of something that is bigger than any one person.
What do I need to bring?
You only need to bring a $10 cash donation for the project, about 3 hours of time, and an open mind and heart for pitching in to give some cheer to others! Some members bring a phone camera or other digital camera to take pictures. Pictures are posted on Facebook after the Pay It Forward meeting to show what projects were done that day.
Why do I need to RSVP?
Tulsa Pay It Forward is growing rapidly. RSVP's help us plan on enough seating and room size.
How/where do I RSVP?
RSVP for the monthly meeting at any of the following...
1. On our handy dandy link here, or
2. On our Facebook event page: www.facebook.com/tulsapayitforward
3. On our Meetup page: www.meetup.com/tulsapayitforward
and if you don't RSVP...don't worry about it!
I forgot to RSVP, can I still come?
Absolutely! Your time, energy and enthusiasm are the most important parts of Tulsa Pay It Forward.
I can't come to your meeting. Can I still donate?
We prefer for you to do your own random act of kindness with the money you would like to donate. Let us know what you did! If you still would like to discuss donating, contact Sharon Kolker.
I don't have ideas for projects. Can I still attend?
Yes! Please do-we want you to attend! We brainstorm in small groups, so many ideas float around. Don't worry if you don't know anyone or don't know anything about Tulsa. We're here to work together. We need your input and your effort to make Tulsa Pay It Forward a success. The serendipity that happens, without preconceived notions, often make the most exciting and heart-warming projects of all!
I can't come every month. Is that a problem?
Never. Join us whenever you can!
Who sponsors Tulsa Pay It Forward?
No one. All projects are funded by the $10 per person requested donation. You don't have to belong to any group or organization to participate. We welcome one and all.
Why don't you....plan projects in advance? do fundraising? do bigger projects? take special requests of hardship cases?
There are so many wonderful ideas and opportunities in Tulsa to do great things! Tulsa Pay It Forward, however, is all about "simple". We find and provide easy and simple ways to care and share with others. We aren't equipped or so inclined for more complex projects at this point. We've found that allowing simplicity to work is the very best part of our group.
Are donations tax-deductible?
We do not have 501(c)3 status at this time. Sorry.
